Adventure caving learning program

The adventure caving program at Naracoorte Caves is a great opportunity for students to experience the underground in a safe, fun, educational environment.

The tours allow students to experience an undeveloped cave – with no defined path, no infrastructure and no fixed lighting – and to gain an appreciation of the cave environment. This is a totally different experience to walking through a fully lit cave.

We currently use one cave for student tours:

  • Stick-Tomato Cave is the easiest to access and no crawls or squeezes are necessary (though some are optional)

Both of these caves have horizontal inclines: there is no climbing or rope work. Both caves are dry with no running or standing water.

The guide will discuss cave conservation, and explain the physical features of the cave and how it was formed. Students are given the chance to extend themselves both physically and mentally, however all smaller tunnels and squeezes are optional. There is no pressure on any student to participate in these.

Experienced guides provide supervision and have a current first aid certificate. It is a requirement that a staff member from the school also participate.

There are various safety measures in place, including a time out procedure where a group running over time will begin a series of checks, culminating in the notification of emergency personnel. This has never happened with a school group. You should also read and understand our Adventure caving information and risk management procedures.
